Fall/Winter 2009
DAVID ALDRICH received his BA in Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia, his BSc in Art as Applied to Medicine from the University of Toronto, and his MEd from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. He has exhibited in both Canada and United States, has had a 20-year career as a medical illustrator focused on pharmaceutical advertising, has taught medical illustration at the University of Toronto and the Cleveland Institute of Art, and has worked to develop courses in observational drawing and human anatomy for the artist.
JENNIFER BASSETT is a graduate (with Distinction) of ACAD's Painting Program. Currently, she is working at the college as the Student Resource Coordinator, and teaching at the Wild Flower Arts Center. Jennifer's work examines the construction of a character's identity using a narrative of her own creation. She works to see a manifestation of her narratives through interactive site-specific installations.
CAROL BEECHER not sure if she was going to be a theatre technician or an animator, Carol figured either way she'd have to be an artist first, so she went to the Alberta College of Art + Design, graduating in 1987. Her first film, an experimental cameraless film (etched on 16mm film stock), Ask-Me, was nominated for Best Experimental Film at the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival in 1996 and received a Director's Citation at the 1997 Black Maria Film-Video Festival in New Jersey. She honed her administration and communication skills as Operations Coordinator of the Quickdraw Animation Society, and oversaw the development of the organization from an animation fan club into an internationally recognized independent production, resource, and education centre for all forms of animation. In 1994, Carol and her partner Kevin D.A. Kurytnik invested in the creation of their own animation production company, Fifteen Pound Pink Productions, named thus because that's how much their cat weighed. 2004 saw the completion of Mr. Reaper's Really Bad Morning, a 17 minute film about the uneasy co-existence between life and Mr. Death. Released on 35mm it has toured the world at festivals, winning the Bronze Award at the Kalamazoo International Animation Festival, behind the Oscar winners for Best Animated Short, Ryan (2004) and The Moon and the Sun (2005). They have just completed a commissioned film, Business as Usual, for Animasivo Animation Forum of the Festival de Mexico and she is currently wrangling a bunch of creatures from the planet Zig 5 with her pencil for the Intergalactic Who's Who science fiction interstitial series.
LESLIE BELL is a Calgary based painter and experimental filmmaker. In 2002, she received her BFA from Alberta College of Art + Design, and in 2009, she completed her MFA in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University, Montreal. Leslie's studio practice is motivated by media experimentation, methodical process and a fascination with the infinite number of ways that forms could be assembled to build composition. She sees visual abstraction as a system of expansive possibility. In 2008, Leslie, received the QAS/NFB Production Scholarship from Quickdraw Animation Society. She is currently working on a series of short films that focus on moving, flowing and evolving abstract paint.
MATTHEW BLAIR was educated in the UK, received a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 1994, a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 2005, and MA in Public Art in 2008. He currently works as a Landscape Architect in Calgary. Matthew has work exhibited internationally in variety of media, which includes painting, printmaking, installation, architecture, and digital work. His specific area of interest is how the built environment affects us physically and mentally.
STACEY BLISS graduated from the University of Alberta in 1992, and taught for seven years in Asia and Canada. Since moving to Calgary in 1999, her focus has been on fine art and conservation picture framing. She finds the interesting aspects of framing are in implementing techniques which conserve the artwork while solving the framing challenges. Stacey also has a passion for travelling overseas and finding materials in other countries which inspire her own art practice.
LISA BORIN investigates the visceral realm of communication, language, and memory through installations and mixed media works that engage the senses. She holds a combined degree in Visual Art and English Language and Literature from Brock University, as well as a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Calgary. Lisa has received numerous awards and scholarships for her research and artistic practice, many of which have led her across Canada, U.S.A., Britian and Scandinavia for various projects.
JULIE CHAPDELAINE is a graduate sculptor of ACAD. She has been involved with model-making and on-site constructions of sculpted landscapes, figurative works and architectural settings for films, theatre, museum and parks. Her work with fossil restoration allowed her to travel and work in Holland and Japan. Presently, Julie is focusing on her own studio work and teaching evening courses for Extended Studies.
SHELAGH CHERAK holds an Associate Diploma from OCAD, and received a BFA in Painting from The University of Calgary. Advocating simplicity in design, she has worked extensively in graphic design and print production for companies such as The Calgary Herald, and the ATCO Group of Companies. Shelagh is now focused on her studio practice and turning to Calgary's river system for inspiration. Shelagh won the BMO 1st Art Purchase Award for Alberta in 2006; and she has paintings in the Alberta Foundation for the Arts collection. To see some of her work, go to www.cherak.digital-arts.ca
CAESAR CHIU was born with a talent and passion for art and design. After receiving his BFA in Jewellery + Metal from ACAD, in 2001 Caesar was awarded "1st place" from the Royal Canadian Mint Jewellery Design Competition. Caesar works with various techniques and materials ranging from precious metals and gems, to exotic wood, and high-tech composite materials. Years of experience and skills acquisition developed through various trade practices has enriched Caesar's art-making practice to where he can now custom design and build about anything: jewellery, furniture, and functional and non-functional industrial designs. He has won numerous awards for his designs and work, and has been featured in various high caliber national and international press releases. Currently, Caesar operates a professional practice and focuses his research on the development of high-tech precious metal products production and custom interior design (theme based) products; he also teaches for Extended Studies.
LINDA CHOW is an Award-winning jewellery artist and graduate of ACAD. She has been an established goldsmith for over 20 years. In 1992, she returned to ACAD to explore new metal techniques and applications, and since leaving, has been experimenting with unusual sculptural forms. Linda includes non-precious metals in her jewellery designs and creates wearable sculptures from used culinary objects and other recycled materials. She exhibits both nationally and internationally; and her work is in numerous private collections. Linda is also co-owner of Simply Metal Studio (Calgary).
TIFFANY CHRISTIANSON's love for art began at a young age when she was enrolled in an Extended Studies summer drawing class. More than ten years later, she returned to ACAD and discovered her love for photography, and in 2009, Tiffany graduated with a BDes in Photography. She is currently working out of her own studio and focuses on corporate photography and photo illustration.
LARISSA DOLL received her BFA in Painting (with Distinction) from ACAD. With two assistance grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, she moved to the Democratic Republic of Congo (Africa) where for two years she worked under a project Grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Exploring the dichotomy between war and land, her oil paintings focus on the strength and strife of the Congolese people - notably, the women and children who have been ravaged by war, poverty, abuse, and sexual violence. Rewarded with other grants, Larissa uses these opportunities for teaching and building residency programs for schools in Northern Alberta.
HUGO DUBON was born in San Salvador (El Salvador) and immigrated to Canada in 1987. He graduated from ACAD's Visual Communications Program in 1997. In tandem with his illustration work, Hugo has been represented as a gallery artist--first with Artspace (1999-2007), and currently with Axis Gallery, which already held an exhibition in August of 2008. BRIAN FLYNN was born in Canada but is also an Irish citizen. Throughout his life, he has moved back and forth between both countries. He has a Master in Fine Arts Degree from the University of Ulster Belfast (N. Ireland) as well as a Fine Art Diploma from ACAD. Brian has received major art grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, The Irish Arts Council, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (Canada). He has solo exhibitions in public galleries that include: the Art Gallery of Calgary (Canada), ace art inc. (Canada), the Sirius Art Center (Ireland), and the Basement Gallery (Ireland). He also has upcoming solo public exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in Victoria, B.C. Notable group exhibitions include the Lulea Biennale, Sweden 2007, the ev+a art festival in Limerick, Ireland, and the Huntington Art Prize held annually at the Royal College of Art, London, England.
CHRIS FLODBERG was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. After completing his BFA at the Alberta College of Art + Design, he went onto pursue an MFA in painting at the University of Alberta. Chris taught painting and drawing at the UofA both during and after his degree and was later hired-on at ACAD where he was a drawing and painting instructor. JENNEA FRISCHKE is an interdisciplinary, Alberta-born artist currently residing in Calgary. In 2006 she received her BFA degree (with Distinction) from ACAD, where she majored in Jewellery + Metals. Jennea maintains an active jewellery practice, teaches at ACAD, and also works as an international vintage procurer. She exhibits her work in Canada and is active in local markets, such as the Market Collective, and other community art events. Jennea is influenced by her surroundings, nostalgia, vintage themes, and nature/ornithological interests. Attracted to color and design, she is driven to explore different mediums and techniques, and works to combine precious and non-precious materials such as metal, plastic, textiles, and vintage components into one-of-a-kind, quirky pieces of jewellery and wearable art.
KARL GEIST graduated from ACAD in 1990 with a Diploma in Visual Communications, and is a recipient of Honors of Visual Arts from the University of Victoria. He has been an illustrator and artist for the past 13 years. Represented by Masters Gallery (Calgary), Karl also has works in various private and corporate collections throughout Canada and abroad.
ROBERT GEYER is a member of the Glass faculty at ACAD. He has a BFA in Sculpture from the Emily Carr Institute, and a MFA in Glass from Tyler School of Art (Philadelphia). Robert continually strives to capture the unique possibilities of glass--as an art material. He regularly exhibits throughout North America and Europe.
TIA HALLIDAY is a Calgary-based artist and art educator. She studied at ACAD, Ontario College of Art and Design, and the Art Institute of Chicago; and recently completed her MFA at Concordia University in Montreal. Tia has received numerous scholarships and awards for her work and has exhibited across Canada and in the United States. She returns to Calgary after having taught undergraduate courses in Fine Arts at Concordia University in Montreal.
KERRY HARMER holds a BFA in Design Art from Concordia University in Montreal and a MDes in Industrial Design from the University of Alberta where she taught design for five years. Kerry has worked professionally as a furniture designer in Montreal and Edmonton. Her furnishings and accessory designs have been exhibited across Canada and her work has been published and presented internationally.
REBECCA HIRSEKORN works as a graphic designer for a public relations firm. With an emphasis on the design of print material for corporate communications, Rebecca's solid background in art and design lends a unique creative flair to all her projects, which includes logo design, corporate identity, and annual reports. Rebecca holds a BFA Degree in Visual Arts from the University of Victoria and a BDes Degree from ACAD.
BREE HOREL is a graduate of the faculty of Drawing at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Through a variety of mediums such as video, drawing, textiles and social sculpture, she uses humour to both critique and enjoy the world we live in. She currently lives in a self-made museum and co-publishes the "Eligible Bachelors Almanac of Calgary". Her work is part of several private collections across Canada and the United States.
HEATHER HUSTON received her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Alberta in 2006, and is currently an instructor at ACAD. She has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, and has works in several collections, including the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, and the Ottawa School of Art. Heather's work is based on miniatures--the 'every day,' and on trying to find interesting structures in cookie-cutter neighborhoods.
JOAN IRVIN is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, writer, and curator. Her jewellery and small-scale mixed media works have been exhibited nationally, in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Originally trained as a ceramist, Joan obtained a BFA in Visual Arts from The University of Calgary, and subsequently completed The Banff Centre's Advanced Studio Program. After working as a ceramic artist and technician, and Supervisor of Calgary's Wildflower Arts Centre, Joan registered in the Jewellery + Metals program at the Alberta College of Art + Design in 1999; winning numerous award and graduating with distinction. She further developed her metalworking skills through study at the Penland School of Crafts, working with a goldsmith, and an AFA Art Production Grant. An active arts advocate, Joan was recently awarded the Alberta Craft Council's 2009 Award of Honor. Examples of Joan's work can be found in Dona Meilach's book, Teapots: Makers & Collectors.
ADRIENNE JENKINS obtained her BFA in Painting from ACAD in 1999. She enjoys working in both two- and three-dimensional media. An active participant in the Calgary art scene, Adrienne's work has received local media coverage in both print and television. Her pieces reside in a number of private and public collections; and her work has been featured in solo and group shows, and juried exhibitions. Adrienne teaches K-12 art throughout Alberta for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Schools Residency Program. She is presently painting a centennial mural for the town of Irricana. GEMINESSE JOHNSON after a field trip to ACAD, Geminesse was inspired to pursue a career in the arts. She received her Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication from ACAD in 2002 and has since worked as a designer and art director in retail advertising and corporate communications. Geminesse's range of experience reaches far beyond her years, she recently designed a national Olympic campaing for Canadian Pacific's sponosrship of the 2010 Winter games. She continues top inspire others and teaches a Graphic Design course with ACAD Extended Studies.
CHARLES LEWTON-BRAIN studied and worked in Europe and North America. A master goldsmith, author and artist, Charles teaches internationally on his research into rapidly manipulating metal and surfaces for artistic and manufacturing reasons. He invented "Fold-Forming"– a completely new system recognized in metal working. Past-President of the The Canadian Craft Federation, Canada's national organization for the craft sector, Charles co-founded the Ganoksin Project (ganoksin.com) with Dr. Hanuman Aspler–now the world's largest internet educational resource for jewellers. You'll find over 700 pages of his writing there, and four million unique visitors a year! Charles has written seven books: on goldsmithing shortcuts, studio photography, safety for jewellers, and hingemaking; and translated the 560-page Theory and Practice of Goldsmithing, by Erhard Brepohl, from German into English. TAMMY MCGRATH holds a BFA in Painting and an MFA in Intermedia. She is a painter, multimedia installation/performance artist and sculptor. Tammy has presented her artwork, lectures and artist talks nationally and has received numerous grants and scholarships. She has taught studio courses at the University of Regina, The University of Calgary, and ACAD. She also initiates and spearheads projects like the 'Mountain Standard Time' performative art festival, 'Space for Space' performative art collective, and 'EX 120'--a continuous 24 hours/day, five-day performative art festival in Calgary. She volunteers much of her time to non-profit art organizations, and has been a jury member for local and national granting agencies and art institutions. In her art practice, she examines constructed identities, how knowledge is retained and erased, hierarchical systems, and community. Currently, Tammy is working on an installation titled "Voir Dire," which will be exhibited in Calgary in the fall of 2009.
ALISON MIYAUCHI is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania and a former Research Fellow of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington (DC). She is a practicing designer and artist. In 1990 Alison Miyauchi was a curator and designer for "Glasgow’s Glasgow," the keynote exhibition celebrating Glasgow’s reign as European City of Culture. Alison has also lived and worked in Milan and Rome (Italy), Glasgow (Scotland), and London (England). After returning to Canada in 1992, she has been teaching Design History and Visual Communications at ACAD since 1993, as well as maintaining a design business of her own. Alison is also a freelance curator whose recent exhibitions include: "Lest We Forget: Canadian Designers on War," "A Fine Line: Works by Dennis Budgen," "Worth a Thousand Words - Contemporary Alberta Illustrators," "Rough Cuts: Sustainable Product Design by Stuart Walker," and "Hothouse Design Studio - On the Leading Edge." Her clients have included: Glasgow District Council; Strathclyde Region Council; Canadian Wilderness Videos; STARS; Triangle Gallery; Carewest Foundation; and Parks Canada.
GARY OLSON --BFA (Minneapolis College of Art & Design) and MFA (Indiana University). Gary is a practicing artist and teacher. He currently heads ACAD's Print Media Department.
LYN PFLUEGER received her science Degree from Sydney University, and worked for a number of years as a biochemist. In 1995, she graduated with a BFA Degree from ACAD and then taught in the Fibre Department as a part-time sessional instructor. Her special interests include felt-making, the properties of materials, and the structure of surfaces.
SHONA RAE was a professional clay sculptor for nearly a decade before a series of dreams led her to begin studying goldsmithing and metal arts in 1994. She received her Diploma in Applied Art and Design from the Kootenay School of the Arts Cooperative in 1998; and then in 2000, she received her BFA (with Distinction) from ACAD. After nearly 30 years as a ceramist she has discovered that metal is clay! and is enthusiastically applying that knowledge to her creative works. After teaching jewellery and small object design for two years at the Kootenay School of the Arts, Shona returned to Calgary where she runs a professional practice, teaches part-time at ACAD, and in 2004--co-founded INFLUX, a contemporary art jewellery gallery. Shona Rae has won numerous awards and attention throughout Europe and North America for her sculpture and art jewellery. She maintains a deep commitment to the study and creation of art, craft and design.
CAM ROBERTS is an Alberta born artist and graduate of ACAD. He is active in his own studio with commissioned work and personal development. 'Having a passion for the figure,' he attends various life-drawing sessions throughout the city. Cam uses a diverse range of medium in his work. ROB RODÉ is principal of the Cheryl Starr Design Group, and brings a history of film and video production to his knowledge of design and emerging technology. A disciplined designer and creative thinker, his 13 years of experience in print-focused solutions have earned the Group a reputation for exceptional quality within the print industry. His responsibilities are to 'make it happen' - to produce any project the Group can conceive of. As a passionate technophile Rob embraces the Mac and all of its relative software to produce print, web, multi-media and interactive solutions. With proficiency in Adobe products (including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, Keynote, PowerPoint, iLife and Final Cut Pro), Rob's understanding, system knowledge and voracious need to absorb 'all things Mac' means he is consistently consulted by clients, industry leaders, peer groups, suppliers and even competitors for guidance and expertise in system decisions and trouble-shooting for solutions. Rob is also a principal of Buro Block Building Corp - a company developing and building commercial real estate projects of exceptional architectural vision and inspired use of space.
DAVID SCHLEINDL received a BFA in Film and Video from the Emily Carr College of Art and Design, and a BArch from the University of Toronto. Prior to starting his design-build company in Calgary, he worked on numerous planning and design projects in Banff and Lake Louise, the greater Vancouver area, the Caribbean, China, and Australia. In addition to residential design and commercial interior design, David also works on public art projects, such as the recently completed plus 15 installation in downtown Calgary.
ROBERTA SHAW received a BFA (with Distinction) in Printmaking from the University of Calgary. She has a love of drawing but was attracted to printmaking because of its mark-making capabilities. Roberta works in intaglio, lithography, and silkscreen, and has developed a passion for the print process. Currently, she works full-time at ACAD in the Bookstore.
JOHN SMITH JONES graduated from ACAD in 2008 in the Jewellery + Metals Program. He has worked for many years in the oil and gas industry in Canada and overseas. His practice is mainly in making raised metal vessels, exploring form, surface, and colour. Examples of his work can be seen at johnsmithjones.com
MARGOT VAN LINDENBERG studied Education in the Netherlands, and received her BFA (with Distinction) from the Fibre Program at ACAD. Influenced by living and working in Africa and the Arctic, she explores identity through microscopic imagery, using thread to create new forms. Recently, she was honoured to exhibit in the 5th International Biennial of Textile Art in Buenos Aires (Argentina). Margot also designs and produces a line of contemporary silk scarves. She uses surface design techniques of hand-dyeing, devore, silk-screening, shibori, nuno-felting and stitching, and grows her own plants for natural dyes.
MARK VAZQUEZ-MACKAY graduated with a BFA Degree in Painting from ACAD in 2002--before moving to San Miguel de Allende (Mexico) in search of a different culture and history. After completing his MFA Degree at the Instituto Allende, Mark returned to Calgary in 2004 to continue painting and drawing in his own studio. RICHARD VETEIKIS -- Art Director and motion graphic designer--has spent the last 13 years working across North America creating animations and graphics for clients such as National Geographic and ABC Television. From billboards in Times Square, to YouTube videos for radio stations, in various mediums--Richard's designs have been seen by millions! A graduate of the University of Texas film school, his more recent work can be seen around the Saddledome during Calgary Flames games, on video screens at Flames Central, and on Citytv.
CLAIRE WATERS is an ACAD Graduate (2003) and has always held an interest and love for painting and drawing. With studio space in Art Central, she has an excellent environment to allow her creative juices to flow and to be surrounded by the community of fellow artists within Calgary. "The process of my art-making has always represented escapism for me: Being fully present in the formation of each piece, allowing a unique image to grow into fruition brings me the enjoyment of creating. Landscapes, in particular, are an area that I will continue to explore. My focus is based on the emotion a painting evokes within, sometimes a memory, which is associated with landscape. Creating abstractions allows me to explore colour, shapes and territories within my art."
STACEY WATSON studied at the University of Calgary in Photography and Printmaking. Her MFA program also involved training at the Royal College of Art in London. Since finishing her formal education in 2004 she has exhibited internationally, including at Art Basel Miami in 2007 and locally, including at The Art Gallery of Calgary in 2009. Her practice spans photography, video, assemblage and painting, along with heavy doses of papier mache. She has taught at Havering College, England and the University of Lethbridge. She is currently the Curator at Pith Gallery, Calgary."
COLIN WAY graduated ACAD with a BFA in Photography. His work specializes in advertising and editorial work and has been featured in various publications such as Avenue, Fashion, Chatelaine and The Financial Post. While most of Colin's work is rooted in the advertising and magazine realm he has recently branched into more fine art work focusing on mixed media and collaborating with illustrators and designers. SARAH WIDDOWSON came from Oxford (England) to Canada in the late 80s. Acquiring an interest in calligraphy in high school, she followed numerous opportunities which led her to teach calligraphy in elementary and junior high school, Time Out groups, and at the Teachers' Convention. Sarah currently works with a seniors group, and has taught through the City of Calgary's Leisure Learning and the Bow Valley Calligraphy Guild. She is published in two calligraphic books and enjoys the opportunities that freelance work brings. Her favorite hand is Italic.
MARK WIKKERINK came to Calgary in the summer of 2006, leaving beautiful Vancouver Island where he was raised. Figuring it was time for another change of scenery, Mark attended Dordt College, a private, liberal arts college in the tiny town of Sioux Center (IA). It was there--while double-majoring in Graphic Design and Business Administration, that Mark fell in love with photography. After working as an assistant and learning from various photographers, Mark entered sales to learn the technical equipment aspect of photography. Now running his own photography business, Mark mainly shoots weddings: By capturing the emotion and details of the amazing day! Mark endeavors to tell the story of the couple's first day as husband and wife. He also enjoys sharing his gifts and abilities with others, and is inspired by those who have a hunger and thirst for more knowledge.
KARI WOO is a full-time contemporary art jeweller who doubles as a mixed media assemblage artist. She is co-founder/owner of INFLUX Jewellery Gallery (influxgallery.com) in Calgary, an instructor with the ACAD Extended Studies Program and a founding member of crafter collectives in Calgary and Vancouver that advocate for the handmade and buying local. Her mixed media work, which explores issues around cultural identity, has been exhibited in Europe, Canada, the U.S, South Korea and at the Museum of Vancouver as part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Woo's sophisticated, clever and versatile jewllery designs are inspired by the contrasts between urban and natural environments and are available in design boutiques across the country and in select U.S. locations. Kari graduated with her BFA (Honors) from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2003.
WILLIAM YEE came from Hong Kong in 1975 to seek freedom and inspiration in the arts. After a year of study in The Fine Art Faculty at the University of Lethbridge, William came to Calgary in 1977 to join the first group of students to enter ACAD's Photo Major Program. Since then, he has been involved in various commercial photography businesses, including set up of the first independent 1 Hour Photo Lab in Calgary in 1985. In his 30+ years as a professional photographer, though working in many fields of commercial photography, William's passion remains editorial photography: He believes a photo should lead viewers to think and imagine what the story is behind the image, and that there should always be a deeper meaning in a photograph besides the obvious presentation of the image.
