Programming Approach

The diversity of program and approaches to communicating is constantly under review and increasingly responsive to institutional needs including original exhibitions, notable traveling exhibitions (co-produced with the IKG whenever possible), publications in various media, artist talks/workshops, web projects and so forth. As part of its provincial mandate to "act as a provincial visual arts resource and [in] its public service role enhance cultural and artistic awareness in the College, community and society at large," the IKG has presented its annual program in and through its on-campus gallery since 1958.

The gallery has presented the work of hundreds of artists including; Steven Shearer, Albert Oehlen, Chris Burden, John Hall, Katie Ohe, Jane Kidd, Liz Magor, Attila Richard Lukacs, Guerilla Girls, Michael Snow, Antoni Tapies, Chris Cran. These and many more artists have exhibited in solo and group shows, special projects, publications and web-based information.

The IKG also hosts an annual Graduating Students' Exhibition (Grad Students' Super Show) to introduce and contextualize the work of a new crop of emerging Alberta artists. The gallery has contributed to the College's visiting artist program of talks and demonstrations by co-sponsoring/coordinating a wide range of cultural producers, including Jeff Koons, Alfredo Jaar, Annie Pootoogook, David Altmejd, Louise Dery, Linda Yablonsky and Barbara Fischer.

Other programming co-produced by the IKG takes place off-site, in the immediate community and beyond. For example, co-produced projects include a lecture by British-Tanzanian architect David Adjaye at the University of Toronto School of Architecture (March, 2006) and a new film installation by Danish filmmaker-artist Jesper Just as part of the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival (September, 2006).

The Illingworth Kerr Gallery is a department of the Alberta College of Art + Design, which is just north of downtown Calgary. Admission to the IKG is free and the gallery has more than 35,000 visitors a year.  The IKG serves the College's students and faculty as well as cultural producers and the public.
