Performance and Activism in Everyday Life
This workshop, presented by Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Festival Society (M:ST) and The Alberta College of Art + Design, will provide students from the Alberta College of Art + Design with the opportunity to work with renowned multidisciplinary artist Cheryl L'Hirondelle.
Participants will come to the workshop with an idea or project and will work with L'Hirondelle over the course of five days to develop and prepare a performance for presentation. The workshop will culminate in an evening showcase that will present the next generation of Calgary performance artists. This workshop will help expand students understanding of performance art practice in relation to collaboration, community, and activism. The workshop leader, Cheryl LHirondelle (Vancouver), has a background in performance art, interventionist art, community activism, lo-fi media tactics, decolonization strategies, net.art, installation art, audio art, critical analysis, vocal technique and movement.
Participants will focus on the development of performance-based interventionist strategies using voice, movement, space, objects, audio and costume. It will also include an examination, from a range of cultural perspectives, of interactive and collaborative relationships between performers, audiences and communities.
The workshop will include full group exercises and discussions, smaller group activities, movement and voice-based activities, presentations by the artists on related issues in their own work, critique and development of new work by participants and field trips where necessary.
