Sarah Anne Johnsons photographic work has explored realistic, workable utopias in Manitoba tree planting communities and among environmental volunteers in the Galapagos. Her new work has a more personal focus, investigating familial community and personal history.
Johnson received an MFA from Yale University and taught there for two years following her graduation. In 2008 she won The Grange Prize for Photography. Her work has received positive critical reviews from Roberta Smith (The New York Times), Vince Aletti (Modern Painters) and Jerry Saltz (The Village Voice). Her work is in several distinguished public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, as well as private collections.
