Exhibition Statement: In a world of fleeting images and information overload, the process of documenting one’s work as an artist can be a daunting task. Documentation in the Expanded Field examines how a group of graduating students discovers creative ways to produce meaning through the process of documentation. How do artists document work that resists documentation? How do they determine what is significant? How do they make materials and process manifest? How do they produce archives as bearers of meaning and content?

This exhibition borrows from art historian Rosalind Krauss the concept of “the expanded field”. This framework encourages documenting one’s work in a manner that shifts away from strict conventions and traditions. A document is no longer a set of information designed and presented as a direct translation. Current documentation embraces a diversity of approaches, materials and arrangements. This expansive concept of documentation is a complex entanglement of mediated object, image, text, conceptual framing, and viewer’s reception. Documentation in the Expanded Field explores twenty-one propositions: the document as archive, as record, as practice, as promotion, as artwork, as materials and process, as remediation, as mapping, as recollection, as journey and experience, as perception and interaction, and as response. All these approaches seriously engage and expand the condition and practice of interpretation.
