Journey Through the World of Visual Art

Following on last year’s successful Reel Artists Film Festival at the Alberta College of Art + Design, we at the Canadian Art Foundation are delighted to collaborate again this year with the Illingworth Kerr Gallery. After all, art and design are constant journeys of exploration and revelation that unfold over time. And I have a personal theory: that it takes at least 30 years for us to begin to understand and appreciate the creative leaders of our era.

On that note, this year’s festival presents in-depth views of some of the contemporary art world’s most respected and longstanding talents—leading figures from Britain, Canada, France, Japan, Poland, Switzerland and the United States. Intimate portraits of Canadian artists Françoise Sullivan and Takao Tanabe, both in their 80s, are featured along with a film on Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and cinematic look at Louise Bourgeois, who is now 98 years old. These artists continue to make work on a daily basis and offer vital contributions to the contemporary world.

A special added feature of the festival that I particularly enjoy is the participation of ACAD faculty and members of Calgary’s creative community, who share their insights with audience members prior to each screening. Thank you to IKG Director/Curator Wayne Baerwaldt, IKG Assistant Curator Jennifer McVeigh, the Reel Artists Calgary Advisory Committee and our festival sponsors for helping to bring the festival to Calgary. Sincere thanks also go to all the directors, producers and distributors involved.

We hope you get as much enjoyment from these films as we do from programming them!

Canadian Art Foundation

The Canadian Art Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization established to foster support of the visual arts in Canada. The foundation unites art, ideas and people from coast to coast through a diverse array of national and international programs and the publication of Canadian Art, Canada’s most widely read visual art magazine.

Reel Artists Film Festival

The Canadian Art Foundation’s Reel Artists Film Festival is being presented free of charge by the Illingworth Kerr Gallery and its sponsors for the second year in a row. We’re pleased to feature some of the most exciting documentary films available today. Each provides an in-depth profile of an artist, designer or legendary art dealer to highlight the remarkable creative process. Reel Artists reveals not only formative ideas behind the creative process, but also broader insights into trends in art and design that constantly shape and redefine us as viewers. You’ll find that every individual profiled in this festival makes a unique and often surprising contribution to art and design history.

The magic of Reel Artists 2010 in Calgary is that we can extend and expand the viewing program to suit the needs of our audience. This year, in addition to our film program, two engaging projects will stimulate the creative process: a scriptwriting workshop for ACAD students by Winnipeg-based filmmakers Noam Gonick and Joshua Wade, and an immersive, multimedia performance by San Francisco–based artist Mia Makela.

We would like to sincerely thank Ann Webb, Executive Director of the Canadian Art Foundation, as well as the foundation itself for producing Reel Artists. The Canadian Art Foundation continues to present high-quality educational programming on visual arts and design to Canadians across the country and our gratitude is extended to the board of directors for its efforts. We’d also like to thank the Alberta College of Art + Design, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Mr. Peter Boyd, the Department of Interior Design & Art History at Mount Royal University, Ms. Judy Gladstone and our Reel Artists Calgary Advisory Committee: Paula Dozois, Gregory J. Forrest, Margo Helper, Kurtis Lesick, Sanja Lukac, Diana Sherlock and Loren Spector.
