Event Summary (one sentence maximum): * *

Tell as much about the event, as clearly as possible, in the smallest amount of space.

E.g., "New York-based artist, Glen Ligon will work with filmmaker Deco Dawson and a group of ACAD students to recreate the death scene from the black-and-white silent film, Uncle Tom's Cabin."

Detailed Description (one paragraph maximum): * *

E.g., This Marion Fund workshop will allow a selection of ACAD students to work with Glen Ligon and Deco Dawson to bring new life to the classic film, Uncle Tom?s Cabin. The original film featured actors in blackface and fantastic hand-painted sets. Ligon has chosen a particular scene at the end of the film, called "The Death of Uncle Tom," when an angel appears and visions the future of black people flash onto a wall in the background. Ligon intends to produce another version of this minute-long original scene, re-enacting the death of Tom in a barn and creating with students a series of drawings developed in the same style. Students will engage in reading (or watching) Uncle Tom's Cabin, hand-painting a set, and co-producing 19th- century costumes. Award winning filmmaker, Deco Dawson will use a 1920 hand-wound 16mm camera.

Supplementary Info (short artist bio or statement - one paragraph maximum):

E.g., New York-based artist Glenn Ligon is at the forefront of a generation of artists who came to prominence in the late 1980s on the strength of conceptually based paintings and photo text work that investigates the social, linguistic and political construction of race, gender and sexuality. Ligon?s current touring exhibition, Glenn Ligon: Some Changes is an exhibition which explores the idea of ?revision,? highlighting moments in the artist?s practice when existing works and themes are returned to in subsequent pieces and other media. Ligon?s practice, which incorporates sources as diverse as James Baldwin's literary texts, photographic scrapbooks, and Richard Pryor's stand-up comic routines, encompasses painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation, and video. Ligon's art is a sustained meditation on issues of quotation, the presence of the past in the present, and the representation of the self in relationship to culture and history.
