March 4, 2010 (Calgary, Alberta) – The Alberta College of Art + Design is very excited to welcome our 2010 President’s Scholar in Residence, Alfredo Jaar, to ACAD on March 10, 2010 for a public lecture. Alfredo Jaar is one of the international contemporary art’s most exciting voices, and his public interventions, sculptures and photographic works have challenged and captivated audiences around the world. Alfredo Jaar will be delivering a keynote address on his work at 5:00 PM on March 10, 2010 in ACAD’s Stanford Perrott Lecture Theatre, to which all members of the public are invited. A reception will follow in the Illingworth Kerr Gallery.

Alfredo Jaar is an artist, architect, and filmmaker who lives and works in New York. He was born in Santiago de Chile and over the span of his impressive career, he has created more than fifty public interventions around the world. His work has been documented in more than 36 monographic publications over the years, and he became a Guggenheim Fellow in 1985 and a MacArthur Fellow in 2000. In 2006 he received Spain’s Premio Extremadura a la Creación.
Most notably, Jaar has participated in the Biennales of Venice (1986, 2007), São Paulo (1987, 1989), Sydney (1990), Istanbul (1995), Kwangju (1995, 2000), Johannesburg (1997), and Seville (2006), as well as the Documenta exhibitions (1987, 2002) in Kassel. A sample of Jaar’s most important individual exhibitions includes the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (1992); Whitechapel, London (1992); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1992); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (1994); Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome (2005); Fundación Telefónica, Santiago (2006); Musée des Beaux Arts, Lausanne (2007); and Hangar Bicocca and Spazio Oberdan, Milan (2008).
