IKG launches winter season with groundbreaking exhibition of work by Attila Richard Lukacs

Attila Richard Lukacs | POLAROIDS: Attila Richard Lukacs and Michael Morris
January 8, 2010 (Calgary, Alberta) – The Alberta College of Art + Design is pleased to celebrate the opening of the 2010 Illingworth Kerr Gallery exhibition season with a groundbreaking exhibition of POLAROIDS: Attila Richard Lukacs and Michael Morris. Join us on January 14, 2010 for the opening reception of this important exhibition, which will run through March 13, 2010.
POLAROIDS: Attila Richard Lukacs and Michael Morris showcases over 3,000 Polaroid photographs by Vancouver painter Attila Richard Lukacs, produced over the past twenty years as referents for paintings, and assembled by curator/artist Michael Morris. Throughout the last twenty years Attila Richard Lukacs has been known for his large-scale paintings of homo-erotic skin heads and uniformed young men, his investigations of exotic landscapes and especially for his handling of paint, tar and other materials applied to various support surfaces.
Less well known is his preparatory work with models photographed with a Polaroid square format integral film camera. The instant portraits, taken by the thousands over the years, became an integral part of his painting process, becoming footnotes for manipulating images on canvas. Each Polaroid acts as a shorthand for figure studies that would inform the strategic planning of his elaborate and celebrated paintings. POLAROIDS: Attila Richard Lukacs and Michael Morris provokes important questions, about our culture’s continuing negotiation of images of men and of the tradition of the nude study, while offering an extraordinary view onto the subject of the human form.
POLAROIDS: Attila Richard Lukacs and Michael Morris is organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Alberta. The Illingworth Kerr Gallery also wishes to thank the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Lukacs Family.
