September 24, 2009 (Calgary, Alberta) – The Alberta College of Art + Design is delighted to welcome world famous father and son glass artists Paul and Dante Marioni to our College on October 4 – 6, 2009. The Marionis are visiting ACAD as a part of the ACAD Visiting Artist Program, which has brought some of the most important voices in art, design and emerging creative fields to Calgary. As part of their visit, Paul and Dante Marioni will present a free public lecture on their work, and their innovative approach to glass on October 5, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the ACAD Stanford Perrott Lecture Theatre.
Known as an innovator in the glass world, Paul Marioni has deeply influenced the growth of the studio glass movement in North America. His work continually challenges traditional notions of what is possible with glass. Centered around the idea that glass is unique in its ability to capture and manipulate light, his work has liberated previously overlooked possibilities for glass and redefines what it is possible to achieve with the material. He is a three-time recipient of the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the 2004 winner of the Glass Art Societies Lifetime achievement award.
Paul’s son Dante Marioni is known as one the foremost glass blowers in the world. His mastery of Venetian glass blowing techniques mirrors his fascination and respect for the glass blowing process. His love for the art of glass blowing has enabled him to transfer the idea of the traditional vessel into modern sculpture through his sensitivity to material, scale, form, color and geometry. His glass objects operate simultaneously as minimalist in appearance yet delicately complex in experience. His work is in the U.S. White House Craft Collection and Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
ACAD’s glass program is pleased to welcome world famous father and son glass artists Paul and Dante Marioni, as they work with students and faculty at the Alberta College of Art + Design between October 4 and 6, 2009. Please join us for their free, public lecture on October 5, 2009.
